 Sweet, login.messaging.aol.com worked for me too. Unless Pidgin has
 login.oscar.aol.com hardcoded somewhere, which I sincerely hope is not the
 case, the name resolution/firewalling must be treating the two
 differently.

 I'm still unclear on why the regular AOL client handles it correctly -
 maybe it's them that has something hardcoded? Whatever firewall/name
 resolution weirdness is going on, it only affects Pidgin.

 In any case, it works now. Thanks for the advice on the different name,
 folks!
