 You're failing to see the underlying issue and have provided no
 explanation for why this is necessary.  "Why does an IM client need to do
 this any differently than the standard system URI handler?" is the key
 question here, and my contention is that it doesn't.

 I have my browser sanely configured and new requests are opened in new
 tabs.
