 Okay, update
 i went thru my router config and added the generic MSN/AOL ports, and that
 seemed to work.

 HOWEVER, I closed those ports off and i could still connect.  I got it
 working, but I still don't know why it decided to spontaneously refuse
 connection.

 guess it's going to be one of those mysteries.
