Comment:

 I'm guessing the accented e in "irisè|" is what was causing the
 problem.  I'm guessing it wasn't UTF-8 encoded.  I tried creating a group
 with that name but it works fine for me--Pidgin is able to read the
 blist.xml file.  I'm guessing the accented e in your blist.xml isn't
 UTF-8, but the one you pasted is.

 You don't know how your group name got like that, do you?  I think that's
 the bug that would need to be fixed, but without being able to reproduce
 it I don't think that's going to be possible.
