 As to how it got that way, I am not sure. I have been using gaim for many,
 many years now. I assume there was some point, in some version of gaim and
 some version of the AOL software, where it occurred.

 I don't know if this will help identify the characters, but here is the
 od-bc output for the part of the file containing the funky iris group
 line...
