 I guess I'm not interested in working around quirks in old versions of
 iChat.

 Even if the buddy icons don't work at all, it really isn't a major issue,
 just an annoyance, IMO.

 The bonjour prpl doesn't exist just to talk with osx, it is intended to be
 [http://www.xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0174.html XEP-0174] compliant; if we
 can talk to iChat at the same time (which it turns out we can), so much
 the better.
