Comment:

 That option in that plugin is designed to let you shrink the buddy list
 down farther than the largest item in the buddy list lets you (most often
 the width of the menu is the contraining width) especially for non-English
 locales. I believe the plugin is misbehaving here and forcing the default
 size to be the minimum size allowed. Though I am entirely uncertain how it
 might be doing that.
