 I usually have relatively few people online (IM chat) and I don't usually
 need to send SMS (the IM chat contacts are more of an every day use than
 SMS ones),

 I have each group filling up the screen because I can't hide the SMS
 contacts.

 The only BAD workaround I could use would be to create a duplicate of
 every group of contacts (one for IM chat contacts and the other for SMS).
 The doble of the groups is a good solution? I don't think so. From 10 to
 20, it's not very pleasant for the eyes.

 P. S.: I would like to suggest you to try SAPO Messenger: it has the
 ability to filter contacts by: 'chat only', 'sms only' and 'both' (in
 Portuguese) for a SAPO Messenger account.
