 In many IM apps, the user is able to "hide" themselves, or "appear
 offline", but they can still send messages and receive responses when they
 initiate a conversation.

 Pidgin has a nasty problem in which, if you wait longer than about 1
 minute to respond to a user that is "hidden", Pidgen will refuse to send
 the message and claim the users is offline, even though the user is not.
 If you respond immediately, however, the message will (usually) get
 through.

 I'm not certain if this is a problem with other services, but for sure
 it's a problem with msn, and it is *HIGHLY* annoying because users often
 don't know you can't respond back to them, thus they think you are
 ignoring them.
