Comment:

 Keep in mind that by modifying the global settings, it'll get replaced if
 you upgrade GTK+.

 GTK+ has a number of quirks when something is abnormal (I have no idea
 what this abnormality might be on your system).

 The only suggestion I have is to try to think what might have changed
 between the time it was working and the time it stopped working.

 At any rate, this isn't something that is directly related to Pidgin (and
 there isn't a whole lot that we can do about it) so I'm going to close
 this.
