Comment:

 You don't cease being connected to IRC when you close the windows
 associated with any sign-on messages the server/services may send you
 since there is no guarantee that all servers will send you anything
 anyway. If you want to join a channel you can use Buddies->Join a Chat
 from the buddy list, there is no need to disconnect and reconnect simply
 to get those windows back (similarly you could use Buddies->New Instant
 Message to start a new conversation with Nickserver, or any other name,
 with your IRC account and be able to type /join commands).
