 coming directly from cyrus not from pidgin. It looks to me like your
 server and cyrus are disagreeing about how one proceeds with DIGEST-MD5
 authentication. If you rebuild pidgin without cyrus sasl it will likely
 work, but the better course of action might be to figure out why cyrus
 thinks things aren't right.

 Thank you for your help, I will try looking at debian's libsasl and the
 jabber server, time to start reading some docs at Carnegie Mellon I think.
