Comment (by wbadger):

 Thank you for the response.

Today I have been experiencing this again, this started happening after I
unlocked my computer - I like to keep it locked for the night sometimes,
and this time I left pidgin open.

This is the first time I tried debugging on linux so I hope I did this
 right:
I reconfigured the source with './configure
--prefix=/home/tomer/pidgin_install --enable-debug', then 'make' and 'make
install'. This seemed to go smoothly.

Then I started pidgin from the new install and entered my ICQ account,
seconds after loading the contact list it again got stuck.

Here is where [http://pastebin.com/mb31c4d8 the log] begins.
Basically I started gdb, attached to the process (was 576). It couldn't
recognize where the program was apparently so I had to continue running
then sigint and only then it let me step. I entered "s" once and then just
pressed enter and held it pressed for a few seconds so you will have an
idea of the lines where it gets stuck. It seems that you were right and it
is between lines 817 and 887 in file
libpurple/protocols/oscar/family_locate.c. I believe it spends a lot of
 time in lines 819-824..

I really hope you can make out something of this.

And in case you missed the link earlier, [http://pastebin.com/mb31c4d8the
 output from gdb].
