 Thank you for the second patch.
 It did not fix the problem, however I hope the console output you added
 will help (attached).

 I will head off to Spain tonight so it seems I won't be able to help for
 the next two weeks.
 I hope we can resolve this when I get back.

 By the way, it would help me if you told me how to remove an edition of
 pidgin I installed from source. I know the command should be "sudo make
 uninstall" but how do I tell it which pidgin to remove? I have 4 editions
 by now (normal one in /usr/local/, and three debugging versions in
 ~/pidgin_install[1,2,3]).
