 Removing tcl.dll got me to the point of pidgin starting up.

 Thanks!

 PS: What effect does removing the Tcl plugin have an pidgin? Just
 wondering if this is something I can live with indefinitely.  The Tcl may
 be used by some part of our environment so I don't know how easily I can
 get it updated.
