 just played with gtalk it look like it also doesn't update number of new
 mails for long time.  But, at the same time, it looks like it recalculate
 the number every time it receives notifications from server (and perhaps
 it also requests this number if it have not received notification for too
 long (but this is just a guess :)

 I'd say that it would be nice if pidgin does something similar.  And for
 sure it should remove notifications if user disable the account which has
 reported them.
