 ok. but given it's been done over and over again, doesn't this point at
 something being wrong?

 Of course, this would be improved somewhat if it were easy to tell that
 you have a person grouped with multiple protocols as there is no
 indication unless you hover over the name and you have no idea which
 protocol you are sending with as the icon is just green.
