home PC is on. Here again pointing me to the router. So I am wondering
what I need to open up port wise so communications can happen. The router
does have a DMZ feature that I could try. In fact I may do so just to see
what happens, in the interim though do you have any other thoughts or what
port numbers/types I need to open in the firewall?

Pidgin only needs outgoing port access to sign onto accounts with AIM, but
if you open the account modify dialog, you can see port 5190 listed for
 AIM accounts.
