 Take this scenario,

 You have a Buddy both on the Corporate and AIM systems, because you want
 to talk to them privately outside the corporate im system, it was nice to
 visually see which IM system you were talking to them on.  In general I'm
 only asking for this to be in the Buddy list, but I can see that many
 would like something in the chat windows too.

 Implementing this could simply be a icon subscript after the Buddy's
 Alias.
