 This scenario is already well-solved.  In order to choose a specific buddy
 within a contact (which is the ''only'' time where this becomes an issue),
 you must expand the contact -- expanded contacts already show the protocol
 icon beside the status icon.

 I think most comments on this thread would be well-served by a little more
 forethought.
