 The 'Blink on new messages' menu item on the system tray icon doesn't work
 for you?

 The mail icon is fine as far as I am concerned I have had IM conversations
 that were less immediate then emails many times. I feel that distinction
 is in your head and not likely a general one, that being said I do think
 replacing the icon entirely with an envelope is not the best idea as it
 requires you to remember what application has that icon, so I would be
 open to an emblem envelope or some other such notification system/icon.
