 Blink works.  The setting was lost during upgrade.  I couldn't find a
 setting in preferences and falsely assumed it was deprecated.  Apologies
 for that idiocy :-)

 Multiple envelopes in the tray (as I and many others will have) is
 confusing so any other icon would be better.

 Do you really see no distinction between mail and IM?  If you do, what is
 that distinction and why would it not have a different graphical
 representation?  To most people, envelope = mail (already a representation
 of a legacy envelope).  IM is intended to be a different and more dynamic
 communication medium.  GAIM, MSN, AIM, and many other IM clients use a
 "person" icon to denote a live person.  Sametime uses a cartoon bubble to
 indicate a live conversation.  Etc.  To most people, envelope = mail.  IM
 is intended to be a different and more dynamic conversational medium.
 True, you can use IM like static mail, but then why not just use mail?
