 OK, so here's the deal.  I can actually send smileys, but they don't show
 up in the text box for the message.  I was assuming that since they didn't
 transform immediately they weren't being sent at all because of that first
 time when I tried to send :-/.  After testing this, I see that, yes, the
 emoticons actually do show up in the conversation text, just not the text
 box where you enter the message to be sent.  Maybe this has something to
 do with what Sean recently posted on planet.pidgin.im about using gtk+ to
 parse the input.  In any case, as long as :-/ has been mapped to :-\ by
 default, I guess I'm happy and can live without the smileys appearing in
 the message text box.
