Evan and I like what you're doing. It would be awesome if you could
submit a patch that JUST updates the bonjour code and the makefiles and
configure stuff to use Avahi. Removing support for Howl is ok, too. Or
you could leave it in, whichever is more convenient. In the future we
might want to abstract out the differences in the zeroconf
implementations, but that's more of a task for the summer of code student.
As for splitting up configure.ac, it sounds like a good idea to me. I
would send an email to our devel mailing list and see how other people
feel. I think it's important that it still be possible to build
libpurple, pidgin and finch with only running configure and building once
(ie. you shouldn't be required to cd into the libpurple dir and run make,
then cd to the pidgin directory and run make, etc). But I say go for it
