 I have the same thing happen. This was also fairly common in older
 versions of Gaim, but seemed to be fixed for a while (until I got Pidgin).
 Now the problem is back, but with some extra things I've noticed:

 1) The false 'new email' notification only appears on first login.
 2) When I've been logged in for a while, and get a new email, the
 notification appears and also displays who it's from and the subject line.
 3) Even when there is one legitimate new email, logging into the Yahoo
 network still shows the false ones with no details.
