 I'm also seeing this issue.

 I generally login/logout of pidgin  without exiting the program, or
 shutting down my computer, every day, for weeks or months: I run linux,
 fwiw.

 What I haven't yet tried, is fully exiting pidgin, and restarting, to see
 if the new-mail issue continues.

 The bug looks suspiciously like a counter that's not being cleared.
 Perhaps this, along with new mail on the server-side that is immediately
 "spam-canned"  is contributing to the anomoly.

 More user testing of this should help.
