 I usually exit Pidgin completely, overnight or when I'm not home. My spam
 in yahoo mail is automatically deleted - it's not being sent to a trash
 folder. I don't think it's a counter, because when I log into Pidgin,
 sometimes it's 3 new messages, sometimes it's 8, then the next time it's
 2...

 I've consistently had problems with the yahoo messaging service over the
 years, so maybe the problem is entirely their fault. Scratch that. Maybe
 the problem is ''partly'' their fault. The new messages still come through
 OK, when they're legit, but there's bogus ones too, so it's definitely
 Pidgin which is unable to recognise the difference.
