 I like that idea, but there are some problems.

 1. Some contacts may sign on with a different status than available.
 2. For new users, it may look like they get a message from that person.

 But I think it's a much better idea than the doors tough.

 What about this:
 When someone signs on the status icon (any available/away/busy/...) pulses
 5 times.
 It starts with 100% transparency, but the transparency decreases when it
 gets closer to the last pulse. The other way round for sign off.
