 eggtrayicon used to be (and might still be) a funny sort of beast, it is
 not pidgin code it is GTK+ (or at least GTK+ related) code, but was
 intended to be embedded into applications (or something like that, I only
 ever vaguely understood). At this point it appears to have been deprecated
 in favor of GtkStatusIcon (which is part of Gtk 2.10). pidgin however is
 supposed to work with GTK+ versions as old as 2.0 and as such can't use
 GtkStatusIcon currently. A patch to make pidgin use the GtkStatusIcon
 stuff when built with a new enough version of GTK+ would stand a chance of
 being accepted assuming it was clean and non-invasive.
