 Like I said, I understand your argument - but mine is another counter-
 argument and a real world situation that you have either overlooked
 initially, or are happy to ignore users like myself and others (e.g.
 Jawrakae from ticket 414) who have a certain workflow.

 "why keeping it as an option isn't something we *thought* was necessary" -
 that was then, this is now.  So you have many people requesting the
 protocol icons back and this goes against your philosophy.  Fair enough,
 but why not implement your philosophy by default, and have a simple tick
 box enabling the protocol icons in the buddy list for those who work a
 little differently?
