 When not using tabs, a similar problem exists: Whenever a new chat window
 appears, it steals focus, interrupting whatever you are doing. I tried
 enabling the feature "Hide new IM conversations", but the result was that
 i never noticed when people contacted me.

 Suggested resolution: New windows should not take focus.
