 The "show timestamps" check box should retroactively show or hide
 timestamps. This information should not be lost when the option is
 unchecked, nor should timestamps be undismissable. I believe the option
 would be more useful if timestamps were treated as metadata, which is
 optionally included in the presentation format of lines of text, rather
 than merged with the lines of text when they are generated.
