 I have read this one and the complete ticket #414 now, and fully
 understand both sides of argumentation. While I actually like the the
 protocol icons more, I can live with the "several accounts per contact"
 version. Unfortunately, the status of single buddies (expanded /
 collapsed) is not saved when pidgin is restarted.
 As a compromise that might satisfy both parties, I suggest an option to
 automatically expand buddies in the buddy list, as long as there are
 multiple accounts assigned. This would meet the current design guidelines,
 as well as the need to see on which account(s) one contact is currently
 logged on.
