 This appears to be due to the beta MSN Interoperability feature in Yahoo!
 Messenger.  I sent a complain to Yahoo! tech support on this, and received
 this:

 "In response to requests from the Messenger community, Yahoo! has
 partnered with MSN to make it easier to instant message your friends.
 You heard it right.  Yahoo! Messenger teamed up with MSN Messenger to
 give you this one of a kind experience.

 Right now this feature is currently in the Beta test phase, and has
 limited availability. While in the Beta testing period, this feature is
 unsupported, which means, unfortunately we cannot assist you with it at
 this time."

 Therefore, I have submitted a complaint to the product dev team at
 http://add.yahoo.com/fast/help/us/messenger/cgi_beta_feedback.  It may be
 useful if others experiencing this issue do so as well.
