Denyri provided good points - there is no good place for such a setting in
preferences. I still disagree with some points
- IM stands for instant message. Messages are supposed to be replied
instantly :) When a chat window gets new messages and you don't have sound
available, the only thing to notice is to stare the Pidgin icon. Static
changes go unnoticeable. You don't notice that you have new messages and
your friends get irritated.
- If 2 frame blinking is irritating - what it is - I suggest that maybe a
smoother animation could be a compromise. Think about on/off blinking leds
vs. Macbook smoothly blinking power leds. Smooth animation gets your
attention, but doesn't "stick in the eye"
- Turn of blinking after a while if no action is taken
- Also, use standard Gnome toolbar notice actions if such exist. Blink
chat window in task bar when there are new messages
