 I'm actually confused whether you are pro or con such a feature :)

 You can always expand the menu like windows start menu does - to two panes
 (not sure if this can be easily implemented in gtk though)

 Since you have 19 groups you will realise the pain it can cause when you
 have to:

 1. Manually collapse all groups
 2. Drag'n'drop users around
 3. Manually expand all groups

 An "expand all/collapse all" menu item would be useful...
