not if you want to be able to save them, name them, reuse them, and have
the saved statuses store the status of each account separately

From a user's point of view it must be.

oh, shoot. have you '''ever''' looked at other messengers?

Both Miranda and SIM let you specify '''both''' global status for all
accounts '''and''' custom status for separate accounts in a one-click
 fashion.

Anyway, see the two files I've attached to see what I mean.

Pidgin has managed to screw up the most basic of IM's functions to the
point it's become absolutely useless. Don't get me started on mystatusbox
plugin :) It's aburdity taken to the extreme.

The most common use case for status changes is: change status
The most uncommon use case is what pidgin provides.

Imagine a miranda/sim/trillian/kopete etc. user switching to pidgin.
Pidgin provides functionality that 20% of users might want and doesn't
provide functionality that 80% of users want.

BTW. All IM's restore their last status on startup - including any custom
statuses set. That's all the vast majority of users want. The possibilty
to save statuses and name them is a fun toy... For a while... One-click
status change is much more important than that
