Comment:

 I uninstalled a bunch of programs I'm not using and disabled a few things
 from running at startup and Pidgin seems to work fine now.

 So I guess it was something else that was running in the tray/background.
 Because I didn't disable things one at a time, I'm not sure who the
 culprit is, but here's the stuff I disabled for reference:

 Apple Mobile Device service
 iPod service
 TuneUp WinStyler Theme service
 Simplify Media (syncs iTunes between remote machines)

 And just to be clear, Pidgin was working fine before with all of these
 things running.  So I'm not sure how the conflict started.
