 Just another thing I noticed, in case it helps narrow things down.

 If start pidgin with just that one AIM account disabled, it doesn't even
 complain about my old blist.xml (I had a copy under ~/.gaim, dated
 2007-11-10, from before my switch to pidgin). I can also enable that one
 account after it is up with no complaint. It doesn't like that blist.xml
 if I start it with that one AIM account enabled, however.
