 And I disagree with you :)
 On the contrary, I think it's very annoying that you don't see smilies
 until after you have sent them. It gives accidental smilies sometimes.

 Maybe this should be a setting (I know we strive to keep our settings
 uncluttered, and use sane defaults if possible), perhaps the "Smiley
 theme" tab should be "Smileys" that has perhaps a checkbox for "Show
 graphical smilies" and one checkbox for "Show smilies as I type", this one
 would be greyed out if the first one is unset. Beneeth these the smiley
 theme selection would appear (again greyed out if smilies are disables).
 Now the "none" smiley theme would not appear in the list anymore (it would
 perhaps be hardcoded to the "Show graphical smilies" checkbox).
