 Well, one thing to try is to take the System Tray out of the picture by
 disabling it completely.

 To do this, we need to edit Pidgin's `prefs.xml` file in a decent text
 editor (which will preserve the line endings) while pidgin isn't running.
 As mentioned in the FAQ, the file is located in the `%APPDATA%` directory
 by default. '''You should back up the file first! '''

 Find the line of the file within the "pidgin" tree which has a pref name
 of "docklet" (`<pref name="docklet">`) (that is to say that the parent
 node is `<pref name="pidgin">`).  Change the `"show"` preference from
 `"always"` to `"never"`, then save file.

 When you restart pidgin, it should not try to put anything in the system
 tray (and anything blocking that shouldn't prevent pidgin from starting up
 at all).
