 I have the exact same symptom and it has been a problem in Pidgin since it
 changed from Gaim at least.  The password works fine in the AOL client,
 the AIM client and the AOL webpage.  Since special characters are an
 important part of secure passwords, I think this needs to be more than
 just "minor" importance.  It has been scheduled for a fix on and off since
 v1.6 but somehow keeps being put off.  Pidgin's too good a product to be
 this lax about security.
