 Yeah, here's the message I was looking for from the new debug log:

 That by itself isn't enough to determine exactly what went wrong, but now
 you know there are two invalid bytes somewhere in your blist.xml.  You
 could try digging through your blist.xml file looking for bad characters.
 Or I guess I look look at it and see if I can figure out what's wrong, if
 you want to email your blist.xml file to me at mark at kingant.net
