 You believe the red is more eye-catching, not everyone does. Especially
 not the red-green color blind people. The point here is that the color
 choice itself is largely arbitrary and not something we can pick to please
 everyone. The FAQ illustrates the current situation if you want to write a
 patch to change the blue color to something more eye-catching you can,
 likewise if you want to write a patch to make the colors configurable you
 are welcome to.

 Writing a plugin for this is overkill, making it a preference is not going
 to be particularly difficult. The issue with the preference route is that
 neither a pidgin preference nor a GTK+ setting fits the usage well, both
 require some amount of concession to "wrong place for this" or "manually
 load something that should be automatic".
