#4174: RAM usage spikes seemingly at random, but with increasing frequency

seemingly at random when I launch Pidgin, the buddy window pops up, but
with the buddy pane completely blank. this in itself is normal, but the
buddies usually load after 30 seconds or so of connecting to servers (I
have accounts for MSN, GTalk, Yahoo, AIM, and multiple IRC servers that I
connect to). However sometimes it won't load at all past opening the buddy
window, and Process Explorer reveals that RAM usage is steadily climbing,
then it begins eating into the Page file, and eventually crashes the
computer. At a certain point I can't even begin a new process to kill
Pidgin and I have to do a hard reset of the computer. I've seen this in
every version that I've used (approximately since 2.2.0), however
upgrading pidgin usually fixes it for a few weeks, but then it begins
happening with increasing frequency, up to multiple times a day.

I am running Windows XP SP2 with a Pentium 3 processor and 512MB of RAM,
my pagefile is set to 768MB.
