Comment:

 I wanted to distinguish between merged buddies and non-merged buddies
 because I want to have the ability to choose a particular IM to
 communicate with for that merged buddy. I usually merge only those buddies
 that use more than one IM. With the intended transparency you mentioned, I
 would sometimes forget that a particular buddy is logged on to more than
 one IM.

 For example, if I had a buddy name John who uses ICQ, Yahoo!, MSN and a
 Sally that only uses MSN, I would just merge all the accounts of John into
 one. In the current design, John and Sally would visually appear as if
 they were not merged, which I gathered from your response was intentional,
 but the side effect is that I would forget that John was merged. Having
 the persistent "+" icon show for John only and not for Sally, I would
 remember that John was merged and consequently, choose which IM method I
 want to use to talk with John.
