 I have the same problem.

 It occurs with all these 3 clients:
  * Pidgin 2.1.1 on Ubuntu Feisty Fawn.
  * amsn 0.97 on Ubuntu Feisty Fawn.
  * Microsoft mac:messenger on Mac OS X 10.3.9

 My guess would be that that XP live messenger uses a newer version of the
 protocol and all of these clients that fail to connect are running an
 older version of the protocol which runs on different servers/services.

 Suggested fix: Switch to an open protocol such as jabber. ;)
