Comment:

 Well first off, port 5269 is not at all the correct port for a client to
 connect to, so undo that change and put it back to the default 5222 (or
 5223 if your server doesn't support STARTTLS and wants you to use the old
 style SSL stuff). That will likely get you connected correctly.

 As to the crash, I believe the problem is caused by the jabber.org.au
 server failing to comply with the XMPP RFC and pidgin implicitely assuming
 it will (or rather assuming properties of the XML stream that go along
 with following the RFC). I'm going to check up on whether my
 interpretation of things is in fact correct but if it is then a bug will
 need to be filed against the server software that jabber.org.au is using
 (which according to their website seems to be ejabberd). Either way,
 pidgin should not be crashing and this will need to be fixed in pidgin.
