 That should have made things work for you in pidgin, I wonder why they
 didn't.

 Can you tell me specifically which input areas it does and doesn't fail
 for you in? Also, can you try other GTK+ applications and see if it works
 in the entry areas in those? (I imagine it will work in one-line entry
 areas but not in multi-line text areas, as a guess as to what is going
 on.)
