 This "solution" is completely unacceptable. While it may be true that it's
 a bug in GTK, it's still pidgin's problem and (in my opinion) makes in
 unusable. This is so annoying I will not use this version (2.2.2), and if
 I couldn't roll back to a previous version, I'd go back to Trillian.

 Either find a work around or use the previous version of GTK. Waiting for
 them to fix it is not a solution and this bug report should not be closed.

 that value in prefs.xml should have no effect (unless you happen to have
 the Pidgin GTK+ Theme Control plugin loaded and put that in the
 preferences section for that plugin and then it *might* do something,
 maybe). And this wasn't a change we made, this was something GTK+ did.
